Please attend the City Council work session on August 5, 2024 at City Hall
The Friends of Castle Creek was formed by longtime Aspen residents who firmly oppose the latest effort to reroute Highway 82 through Marolt Open Space, one of the crown jewels of our town. Aspenites have objected to this plan since it was first proposed by the state in the late 1960s, and we oppose it today. The latest proposal from the City and the State includes two lanes of traffic, two lanes for buses and an additional two full lanes for the highway shoulders. We want to see Aspen’s small town character preserved, and our open space and historic properties protected.
Friends of Castle Creek firmly believe there is a better plan that involves rebuilding and expanding the current Castle Creek bridge with a reversible third lane, and making other improvements that actually address traffic congestion during peak hours. Below are documents to help you understand the issue:
- The city-commissioned Jacobs Engineering Report on replacing the existing Castle Creek Bridge with a new 3-lane bridge. Please scroll through to the “Three-Lane Shifted” option.
- A legal opinion from Public Interest Attorney Bill Eubanks that shows a new 3-lane bridge can be built without lengthy and expensive Environmental Impact Study.
- Plus two documents from the FOCC on the issues.
